ReplyDeleteWe should have a parking lot specifically for the school. Kids always get in trouble for parking at safeway, or at the eye doctor. We should have an area for staff only then students.

ReplyDeleteWe should have student and teacher parking because we have a lot of people who drive to school and not enough parking space to accommodate that.
ReplyDeleteShould Mount Baker have no parking lot? Maybe if the Rec Plex was being built today they wouldn’t put one in. Maybe Safeway wouldn’t either. But I guess our plan is to use their facilities to park our vehicles if we decide we really don’t feel like walking or taking public transport. And we are supposed to be thinking 50 years out, right? So we will have to assume that this will be OK with the Rec Plex for half a century. Is there no chance that they won’t either build something else on their land or realize they can make money from charging for parking in that time period? Maybe 50 years ago this would have worked – after all, MBSS was then on the edge of town with nothing to the north or east for a long, long way. Somehow in the last 50 years lots of buildings and roads have appeared and Cranbrook is a lot denser. Might that trend not continue in the next 50 years? What are the parking arrangements for our proposed 1500 seat auditorium? Where will we park on a Kootenay Ice game night? Or when the carnival is in town? Or the car show is on?
ReplyDeleteYou don’t control what you don’t own. You can park your RV on your neighbour’s driveway as long as you stay friends and he doesn’t move. But if you have the space, you would be wise to keep your stuff on your own property. I think it would be wise to include a parking lot in the plans for the new MBSS campus.

ReplyDeleteit's funny that so much attention is being given to a student parking lot when we should be thinking about being environmental leaders and NOT driving! How about taking a bus? Do we need for parking space or differnent thinking?
ReplyDeleteIt is good to encourage taking the bus, walking, biking, carpooling, etc., but lots of young drivers want to drive to school. I think we should respect that and provide them with a place to park.
ReplyDeleteOf course you need a parking lot. My son had to take French 12 at the COTR and his class started at 3:30pm, without a car he would have been late everyday. The same holds true for having to get to work after school, public transit doesn't cut it.
ReplyDeleteDon't make the student's parking separate from the teachers - too easy for the kids to be doing things they shouldn't be doing.
Would you charge a small fee for a parking pass to help with the costs of maintaining the parking lot?
We need a place for new drivers to park their cars! You can't tell someone who just got their license that they aren't allowed to drive to school because we don't want to give them a place to park!
ReplyDeleteAny building housing a large number of drivers, young or otherwise, for any lengthy period (e.g. 8:30-3:30 or longer) is almost always obligated to provide parking. Parking on private property such as the Rec Plex or Baker Street Mall for hours on end is not very respectful. These landowners may not always be as forgiving as they are today, especially when considering a period of 50 years. A parking lot large enough to handle the needs of staff should be foremost in the exterior planning, with some ample additional space for student parking. You could assign student parking spaces on a basis of students earning the privilege. Students could earn the parking spaces similar to how some companies give the premium parking space to the top employee. This could be on any rotation (week to week, month to month, bi-weekly, lottery, etc) and for any reasons. Student of the "week, month, lottery winner, etc" parking spaces in the parking lot might be incentive enough for some troubled kids to turn themselves around. There will always be legal street parking. Perhaps an opening in the fence along the field would encourage parking on 2nd St North. The question is, how much additional parking is needed-now and far ahead into the future. It shouldn't be "do we even need a parking lot?"
